Camping at Mogollon Rim

It has been WAY too long since we have been able to go camping! 😭

A few weeks ago we tried to go up to the Payson, AZ area and camp near Mogollon Rim/Woods Canyon, but ALL the roads were closed for logging. Who knew?!

Thankfully we were able to go out a few weeks later once the roads were mostly open and ready for camping! Plus friends were able to join us this time, so we could have a great weekend hanging out.

We ended up finding an amazing dispersed camping spot where we were completely secluded and only heard a vehicle in the distance every once in a while.

A few years ago, we purchased a simple tent so we could go overlanding. We failed to account for the size of our new air mattress and the tent quickly became all bed. 🤣

Thankfully we had enough blankets for the first night, though we wanted another one or two the second and had to cuddle up to stay warm all night.

Also, super jealous of the blackout tent that Brad and Kelsie had… our tent was SO BRIGHT. We were up and going at 5am both mornings. 😫

Oh and if you have somehow missed this on socials, the portable Venty fan is a GREAT addition to camping (see right side of the bed). We always need air movement and tents are the worst for that!

Friday ended up being perfectly relaxing. We took off work so we could be up the mountains early and make sure we got a good spot. This meant we had plenty of time to set everything up, burn off pine needles and kindling that we had picked up from the campsite, snack, and just chat and relax.

After breakfast on Saturday, we decided to go for a drive and explore. Nathan and I had never been the “the Rim” so we got to check that off our list! We also explored the Woods Canyon Lake area which was really pretty and calm. No motorized vehicles and a great general store for anything you could need while camping, even a tent!

Nathan also had a great time playing with our friends doggo, Arrow is adorable and so well-trained. He spent HOURS throwing the Frisbie for him and was distraught every time it got “lost” for a few hours before one of us or the dog finally found it and brought it back.

One of the weirdest things of the weekend was the pinecones!

There were hundreds of bags lining the dirt roads that were full of pinecones. We would occasionally see people out in the forest with laundry baskets picking them up.

I think we spent a good hour talking and theorizing about what they were doing with them.

Our best guess is that the forest service either collects them themselves, or you can buy a permit to go collect them. Then they are sold for holiday decorations since they were big good pinecones. Perfect for wreaths or whatever.

We will probably never know for sure, but it was entertaining! 🤣

All in all, we had a fantastic weekend! Now we just want to go out more and our wish list is growing quickly to get things to make camping easier and more comfortable going forward.
