Remote Work & Local Fun in Dallas

There are a few places across the country that Nathan has had the opportunity to visit without me, and Dallas is one of those examples. This year we were finally able to go together so we can officially check it off the list!

Now I won’t lie, Dallas and Texas in general are not ever going to be at the top of our favorites list. Austin may be an exception to that and one day we will be able to confirm, but Dallas is defiantly not going to convince us to love Texas.

Since our trip in Atlanta was cut short we actually spent a week and a half here but all but one day were spent working. Even if we had wanted to do more, there just really isn’t much to do in!

We did get to attend a work event at a local bowling place which was fun.

I learned that Nathan loves bowling, and we need to add that to our activities at home since he is actually really good at it too!

Plus it was nice to meet all of Nathan’s co-workers that I get to hear about but don’t usually get to put a face to the name.

Besides working and work events, our one day of relaxing in Dallas was spent downtown. We decided to go to the Aquarium since we missed the one in Atlanta and then explore and see what we could find.

The aquarium was good, but not great. It’s hard to compare when we have been and love Shedd Aquarium in Chicago.

While sad, it is always nice to see aquariums and zoos taking care of animals who have been hurt in the wild.

This was one of the worst we saw but the otter seemed happy to swim and play so all is good!

The bird on the left was so creepy! No matter where I stood it was like he was staring right at me… I did not appreciate that.

One of the cool features of this aquarium was a walk-through tank. For the Doctor Who fans out there I thought the underside of the swordfish looked exactly like Cassandra 🤣.

After a few hours at the aquarium we had seen everything and were ready to move onto our next adventure.

Though quick side note… remember not to go to any zoo like place on a Friday morning during the fall and school. There was a clearly an elementary field trip that day and the kids got old really quick! Also I am so sorry for the teachers who have to deal with that.

We decided to leave our car where it was and just walk around downtown until we found something cool. We passed a cute park but otherwise it was a pretty quiet downtown.

I had found a place for lunch in my research and it turned out to be cool! The Exchange was kind of like a market and a food court mixed together. It was clearly popular with all the business folks.

The other benefit of a place like this is Nathan wasn’t restricted to burgers just because that is what I had to order. Instead he got to have some tacos which I was very jealous of!

We did finish off lunch with some ice cream, and they even had some vegan sorbet so I could have some too!

After lunch we wandered around a bit and saw the famous giant eye artwork.

Reminded us of the bean in Chicago and how something random or simple can become iconic.

Also, I was serious impressed at the accuracy and detail of this eye! Kinda creepy to be honest.

Sadly there was an event so this was the closest we were able to get to it.

We continued our walk, but I forgot to mention that Dallas was getting the same heat wave Ohio was. So, even though it was October it was so hot and humid, we were dying. I started not to feel well so we decided to head back to the car and get back to the hotel.

Technically there is one other “famous” place in Dallas that we missed. The The Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza or the JKF museum is located here. We did walk past the building and grabbed a picture from the outside. Tickets were expensive though! Since neither of us were very interested and I wasn’t feeling well we decided it was better to skip it.

I was happy to be able to join Nathan on his work trip this time! While I didn’t get to see him much, even a few minutes is better than a week without him.

Plus Dallas is officially checked off the list and we never have to go back!

… until his next work trip 😜.
